Introduction to Slavery

Today we'll begin with an exploration of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Students will choose one section of the collection from the Museum and spend some time exploring it. They should keep track of questions that arise as they browse. When finished, students will complete a notebook reflection about what they saw.
After browsing the different categories, everyone will browse the section on slavery. After keeping track of questions that arise in notebooks, students will begin to create a collage on big paper. Their first addition to the collage should be based on what they saw in the collection from the museum.

We then began our look at slavery as an institution, using a variety of sources to try to describe it. After looking at each of the following sources, we added to our collages by responding creatively to each on our big paper.

Sources
Images of Slavery
Slave Ship Scene from Amistad (warning: graphic-we only watched about the first 4:30 minutes)
Slave Auction Scene from Roots
The Civil War: All Night Forever
Slave narratives (22:50-25:58 and 44:35-46:20)/Slave narrative excerpts
HW for tonight is to finish your Transcendentalism Paragraphs.
