The Civil Rights Movement

Today, we'll start with some writing in our notebooks in response to these ideas:
1) How do you define your generation (either your perspective or how others may define it)?
2) Who are the leaders of your generation?
3) What does your generation value or care about?
4) What would the "name" of your generation be? The _________ generation?
5) Who Has the Power
We'll then take a brief look at the Montgomery Bus Boycott, started by Rosa Parks and where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. first becomes a national figure.
We'll then continue to follow the progress of Emmett Till's generation by exploring the Sit-In Movement in Nashville and the origins of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). We'll follow that by reading Howard Zinn's description of SNCC in this article: The New Abolitionists

During the second part of class, we'll begin by reading an editorial written by white clergymen expressing their concern about the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and Martin Luther King, Jr. coming to Birmingham.
We'll focus the rest of class on King's response by individually reading and answering questions about his Letter From Birmingham City Jail.
